The Keyword Conundrum

Getting In The Search Engines’ Good Books

Ah, the (dreaded) Search Engine Optimization (SEO)! Sounds ominous, but it’s something you cannot live without if you’re looking into starting your e-commerce business. As per the infinite wisdom found on Wikipedia, SEO ‘is the process of affecting the visibility of a website or a web page in a web search engine's unpaid results—often referred to as "natural", "organic", or "earned" results. In general, the earlier (or higher ranked on the search results page), and more frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine's users; these visitors can then be converted into customers.’

HUNKER DOWN AND GET ON WITH IT: It goes without saying that you need to get to grips with SEO if you are to run anything on-line based and achieve success. There are some very good SEO digests or guides out there (check the one from Oberlo here or the one from MOZ here). It may sound overwhelming but with some handholding you’ll be able to get to the bottom of it pretty quickly.

We here at Dropship Explorer have good news for you: the website you get from us is already fully SEO-ed! Product URL-s contain product titles, page titles contain category names or product titles etc. meaning we have you all set up in terms of the on-site SEO.

This, however, does not mean that your dropship website will just magically generate traffic. Most dropship websites do the same in terms of SEO, so you’re up against some stiff competition. In order to get a good ranking on Google and get some traffic your way, you have to work on the number and importance of your inbound links. There are several ways to go about this:

GET THOSE CLIKS FLOWING: Look into your friends who have websites and get them to link up to your website from theirs. However, bear in mind that you cannot abuse this to your advantage – search engines are smarter than that. This means that having 500 links from the same domain – the same website, does not get you better ranking than having 50 links from 50 different – unique - domains. It is these that count, but your friends linking up to your website at the beginning may help and give you a little boost to get out there and get the search engines to recognize you.

SPEAK YOUR TRUTH AT DISCUSSION FORUMS: Get engaged in discussions on forums relevant to your niche/products. Use the opportunity to suggest the discussion participants to visit your website within a thread on a relevant topic and leave a link. Just be careful when you get going in order to, first, not over do it and appear so aggressively promoting that you get yourself considered as spam, and, second, ensure you aren’t breaking any forum rules when you promote your brand or products. You need to get acquainted with the limits and restrictions of the forum and abide by them. Using your forum avatar, signature, and profile page to promote your brand are usually well within the rules.

GET BUSY NETWORKING: Connect with bloggers covering the topic of interest to your chosen niche/products and feed them with a press release or offer a promotion code or some freebies as a show of appreciation for what they are doing in your common niche/industry. This could get you in their good books and get you a seal of approval from people who matter on the internet. Reach out to bloggers, journalists, entrepreneurs, and vloggers and see where that gets you. Worst case, you’ll get minimal or no traffic. Best case, you’ll harness the power of their social media followings and website audience.

USER REVIEWS: Put your users to good use ;) Encourage them to write reviews of the products they get from you – this builds credibility and trust and shows search engines you have enough user engagement.
